This Manipur Man Planted a 300-Acre Forest!

The forest which is now known as Punshilok forest is home to 250 species of plants and 25 species of bamboo.

A 45- year old Moirangthem Loiya, a resident of Uripok Khaidem Leikai in Imphal West, has quit his job to devote his life to environmental causes and has replanted a 300-acre forest all by himself over a span of 18 years. He is responsible for replanting a forest named Punshilok, which translates to “Spring of Life”. He says huge trees and jungles fascinated him since his childhood.

The forest is home to 250 species of plants and 25 species of bamboo is grown here. It is also home to a variety of birds, snakes and wild animals. His efforts and its results have won him appreciation from the authorities.

In 2000, after finishing his college Moirangthem returned and visited the Koubru peak, which once used to be a lush green area. He was devastated looking at the condition of the forest where he was frequent during his childhood. Determined to restore greenery in the area, Moirangthem started looking for a land to plant trees. In 2002, with the help of locals Moirangthem reached Maru Langol hill range. The place didn’t even have a single tree. It was his determination and self-motivation with which he was able to bring back life to nature.

He has now formed a small group with the help of friends and volunteers and wants to expand the forest cover.
