Ooty to ban single-use plastics from August 15
With effect from August 15, the District Administration of Nilgiris has placed a ban on the use of any single-use plastic items like water bottles, soft-drink bottles and food wrappers in the tourist town of Ooty.
Ooty hosts millions of tourists each year. It is the most sought-after destination in Southern India. Ooty has now taken steps to becoming plastic-free. The Nilgiri District Administration has banned the use of single-use plastic including water bottles, soft drinks and food items packed in plastic wrappers along the highways leading to the district’s major towns.
An order from the Madras High Court ordered the Collector to prohibit the entry of all types of plastic packaging items. The hill station has turned into a garbage dump due to the plastic waste they throw and leave behind.
